In Te Reo Māori, aroha nui literally means “great” or “abundant love.” In Māori culture, aroha is a core value that embraces love, compassion, empathy, generosity, and a sense of responsibility towards people, the land, and all living things. Adding nui (meaning “great” or “abundant”) intensifies this concept, so aroha nui expresses a deep, encompassing care that can be directed towards individuals, families, communities, and the environments in which they live. We have adopted this name for our house, as it reflects the profound affection and respect we feel for the people of Japan and the Myoko Kogen region.
